Akamai Basics Review: What I've Used and What I'm Buying Next
An honest look at a natural oral and body care brand I stumbled onto
I bought Akamai’s Mineral Toothpowder a few months ago after getting frustrated with Sensodyne making my teeth even more sensitive. Within a few weeks of brushing with mineral toothpowder, my teeth are no longer sensitive, my gums have stopped bleeding, and I haven’t returned to regular toothpaste!
Here is what I think about this powder and what I plan to try next.
What You Need to Know
The short version before you read on.
- Akamai Basics makes natural oral and body care products using only whole ingredients from plants and the earth — no synthetic chemicals, no naturally derived fillers
- I have personally used the Mineral Toothpowder for 3 months
- My tooth sensitivity is gone, my gums have stopped bleeding, and my teeth feel cleaner than they did with conventional toothpaste
- The taste is earthy and clay-like; the taste may take a few days to adjust but becomes genuinely refreshing
- I plan to try several more of their products and will update this page as I do; everything below the toothpowder section is on my list, not yet tested
- My link gets you $7 off your first order
What Is Akamai Basics?
Akamai Basics is a natural oral and body care brand founded in 2017. Their position is straightforward and a little confrontational: the personal care industry sells you products you do not need, loaded with chemicals you did not ask for, packaged in plastic that ends up in landfills.
I looked into them after their toothpowder worked and here’s what I found. A lot of mainstream products “marketed as natural” still use chemically processed versions of plant compounds. Akamai does not use those. Their formulations are clean enough, they say, that you could eat them.

Close Up of Akamai Basics Toothpowder
The brand has earned endorsements from Dr. Mark Hyman, a New York Times bestselling author and functional medicine physician, and has been covered by The Guardian, Men’s Journal, and a handful of other outlets. They manufacture in the US.
I came across them while looking for an alternative to fluoride toothpaste after years of back-and-forth with sensitivity issues. The Mineral Toothpowder was the first thing I tried and it is the only product I can speak to personally so far. But the brand’s philosophy aligns closely with the same whole-food, nutrient-dense approach that most people reading this site already care about.
Akamai Mineral Toothpowder: My Honest Review
This is the product I have actually used, so I want to be thorough about it.
I switched to the Mineral Toothpowder after 7 years of cycling through sensitive toothpastes, including Sensodyne, which I eventually stopped using because it seemed to make my sensitivity worse over time rather than better. That seems to be the case for a lot of people… desensitizing toothpastes mask the symptom without addressing what is causing it.
Akamai’s toothpowder works differently. From what I’ve read, it contains 72 bioavailable trace and, from their website, “macrominerals, including calcium montmorillonite clay and fulvic acid,” which are designed to remineralize tooth enamel rather than just coat over sensitivity. The idea is that you are rebuilding the tooth surface rather than numbing the nerve response.
And their product actually works.
My First Time Trying Their Powder
The first time their powder hit my tongue, I was caught off guard. The texture is, can I say, “powdery?” and slightly gritty, and the taste is distinctly earthy, like clay, which makes sense because it’s… clay. It does not taste like mint toothpaste and it does not foam. But it does have a minty undertone.

My actual jar of Akamai Toothpowder
Within the first few days of brushing, it was odd… but, by the end of the first week it felt normal, and now I find it genuinely refreshing. My teeth have never felt cleaner and I think it’s because my teeth are finally getting clean.
One Thing to Know
While the brand says it’s generally safe, I have older pipes, so as a personal precaution I spit into a tissue and toss in the trash. It’s better to be safe than get a $300 plumbing bill! And, is using a tissue each time environmentally friendly? No, but if I had a window in my bathroom that went to the ground, that’s where I’d spit.
Honestly, it’s such a minor adjustment and I don’t think about it anymore, but it is worth knowing before you start.
Results After Two Months of Use
My tooth sensitivity is gone. Literally, GONE! I can drink cold water without the sharp cold-jolt I used to get. My gums have stopped bleeding, even after going longer stretches without flossing than I should; hey, I’m not perfect. My teeth feel consistently clean and smooth and my mouth feels healthier.
My initial order lasted about 60 days and I’m already a month into my refill (they sell refill pouches too).
Mineral Toothpowder: Honest Pros and Cons
What I Like
- My tooth sensitivity has been completely gone after only 2 weeks of use
- Gums stopped bleeding even with inconsistent flossing
- Ingredients are genuinely clean — no fluoride, no synthetic chemicals, no fillers
- The earthy, clay taste becomes refreshing once you adjust to it
- A small amount goes a long way. One jar lasted me 2 months
- Refill pouches are available, which reduces packaging waste and saves you $5 on a 2-month supply
What to Know Before You Buy
- The taste and texture are genuinely different from conventional toothpaste and it might take you a few days to adjust
- You shouldn’t spit it into the sink. The clay can eventually clog it
- It does not foam, which feels strange at first
- It costs a little more than conventional toothpaste, but on a per-use basis, you’re saving money
Other Akamai Products I Want to Try
To be clear, I haven’t tried any of these yet but they’re on my wish list. I am including these because they align with the same philosophy as the toothpowder and because I plan to update this page with honest impressions as I buy and use them.

Oil Pulling Mouthwash
Oil pulling is an ancient oral hygiene practice that involves swishing oil around the mouth to draw out bacteria and support gum health.
Akamai’s version is infused with organic essential oils and fulvic acid.
It pairs naturally with the toothpowder as part of a complete oral care routine and is on my list as the next thing I want to add.

Living Clay
This is food-grade calcium montmorillonite clay… the same type of clay used in the toothpowder, but in a standalone form.
It can be used internally as a detox supplement or externally as a skin mask. Given how well the clay-based toothpowder has worked for my teeth, I am curious about what the standalone version does.

Skin Fuel
Akamai describes Skin Fuel as a multi-purpose powerhouse that replaces nine or more products from your routine. It is designed for skin, hair, and body.
The minimalist angle appeals to me, fewer products with cleaner ingredients is exactly the direction I want to go with personal care.

Fulvic Mineral Complex
Fulvic acid is already in the toothpowder and is one of the reasons I think it works as well as it does.
The standalone Fulvic Mineral Complex is described as nature’s ultimate catalyst, it improves nutrient absorption and supports overall health.
This one interests me as an internal supplement addition.

3-in-1 Bar
April 6, 2026: Just bought this and it’s on its way. I’ll add my review after one or two weeks of use :)
A single bar that works as shampoo, body wash, and shaving cream. Loaded with botanical oils and glycerin, no synthetic fragrance.
If it delivers on the multi-use promise, it could replace several products from my shower routine at once.

Complete Starter Kits
Akamai offers several kits that bundle their core products together at a better value than buying individually.
The Oral Care Complete Kit includes the toothpowder, mineral complex, bamboo toothbrush, tongue cleaner, oil pulling mouthwash, and infused floss… essentially everything you need to overhaul your oral care routine in one order.
If you are starting fresh, a kit is probably the most efficient entry point.
FAQs
Akamai Basics is a natural oral and body care brand that makes products using only whole ingredients from plants and the earth. Their products are made in the USA and have been operating since 2017.
It tastes earthy with the slightest mint taste. It reminds me of how dirt smells (without the worms). There is a light herbal quality to it too. The taste might be an adjustment for you, as it was for me, but you’ll get used to it after a few uses.
The clay in the toothpowder can build up in pipes over time and cause clogs. To me, the easiest solution is to keep a small trash bin (with a trash liner) near the sink and spit into that instead. Or better, if you share a trash can with your spouse/partner, spit the contents into a small piece or two of tissue and then throw that away.
It becomes automatic quickly.
It did for me. My teeth became less sensitive after only 1 week of use. After 2 months, my sensitivity is completely gone. From what I’ve read, the toothpowder works through remineralization, not just masking symptoms. So with it, you’re really building your enamel back and fixing the problem.
Yes. Akamai products do not contain fluoride or any synthetic chemicals. This powder is also stevia free. Their formulations use only whole natural ingredients.

Worth Trying If You Care About What Goes in Your Mouth
The same mindset that leads someone to buy a cold press juicer (paying attention to what you put in your body and choosing better ingredients over convenience) applies to toothpaste (or toothpowder) as well. Most oral care products are full of things you would not eat and your mouth is not a closed system.
Akamai is the second brand I’ve tried that made me feel like I was actually improving my oral health rather than just maintaining it. Blueprint by Bryan Johnson was the first.
But Akamai’s toothpowder is the reason I’m here, and it has earned enough trust that I plan to work through the rest of their line (as soon as I can).
